Types of gourds include the bitter melon/bitter gourd, calabash gourd, luffa, and winter melon. When gourds are young and tender, they can be prepared similarly to cucumbers. Older fruits can be boiled and eaten as well. The seeds can be roasted and eaten like peanuts. An edible oil is also obtained from the seed, which is rich in oleic acid. The shell from a mature gourd is very hard and can be used as a container.
